DSL Bonding multiplies DSL access speeds to solve the bandwidth/distance problems, enabling businesses to fully utilise the power of the Internet. In addition, DSL Bonding enables new applications that require the highest transfer rates by supporting connection speeds of up to 4.6Mb. An example of such an appliaction is the transfer of medical images to a remote specialist.

Standard Broadband products offer up to 4 asymmetric or 4 symmetric lines (of the same contention ratio) to be bonded together, more lines can be bonded but this requires a bespoke solution to be created. Only multiple numbers of the same line can be bonded.

Why use it?

You should consider bonded DSL if:

  • A single DSL connection is not sufficiently fast or reliable
  • You want leased line performance at lower cost
  • You need resilience - automatic fallback if a line fails
  • You require more upstream - increased bi-directional bandwidth
  • You are too far from the exchange for 2Mb ADSL - Bond Extended Reach
  • You are using VoIP so need more upstream and resilience
  • You are running web, mail or file servers for remote access
With DSL bonding techniques, two or more DSL lines can be aggregated to create a single logical data channel that is the sum of the individual lines' bandwidth, minus a small amount used for overhead. In addition to aggregate two DSL lines, the technique performs automatic balancing of traffic across the links and actively moitors the performance of the bonded connection. Should one of the links fails for any reason, traffic is automatically forwarded to the active link. When the failed link is restored, the bonded connection is also transparently restored.

From this perspective, DSL bonding not only provides increased bandwidth, but it also provides redundancy in the event of line failure.
